Lionesses fall short in classicSun 11 Mar

A bright, sunny day made for perfect conditions for running rugby and the Lionesses and St Neots did not disappoint with 87 points posted between them in a 46-41 win for the opposition.

Playing 11-a-side due to St Neots’ lack of numbers, Lionesses found themselves trailing by 12 points to nil until Hollie Adams’ try, converted by Kerrie Jackson, reduced the arrears.

This was followed shortly by another unconverted try for the home team. However, good work by the Lionesses, mixing play up between forwards and backs, led to Adams’ second try, again converted by Jackson.

A quick tap-and-go by Emma Pritchard resulted in a straight run through a sleeping St Neots defence for Lionesses third try, which again was converted.

St Neots had the final word of the first half, though, when they powered over for a try from a five-metre scrum to make the half-time score 22-21 in their favour.

Straight from the kick off, Lionesses turned over possession in a maul and St Neots scored their fifth try of the day, quickly followed by tries number six and seven.

Lionesses rallied bravely and responded with tries from Caz Archer and Hayley Richardson – a length-of-the-field effort that capped a memorable debut.

St Neots hit back to score a further try only for Sian Harrison to reply with her first touchdown of the season.

A pushover try for Archer completed the scoring in a thrilling game.

Forward of the match: Donna Whittle. Back of the match: Caz Archer.
