Rugby Lions welcomed league leaders Syston to Web Ellis Road, and with the visitors having a 100% record this was always going to be a tough proposition for the home side.

Lions were without Nick Walton following his two yellow cards last week, but were able to welcome back Daniel Parrington for his first start this season.

Lions were down to 14 men after only four seconds when Guy Field was shown a yellow card for taking the jumper’s legs away straight from the kick-off.

Rugby competed well to prevent any scoring whilst a player short, and indeed took the lead on twenty minutes when a lovely chip ahead by Andy Bowyer was collected by Daniel Parrington who managed to squeeze over in the corner. Syston responded with a well-worked backs move with the left winger coming in to the line to touch down in front of the clubhouse.

Rugby regained the lead from a scrum 10 metres in front of their own posts. Martin Wood picked up from the base and went on a storming run barging numerous players out of his way before feeding Callum Forsyth on half way. He was halted by a high tackle, and with the advantage being played the ball was fed down the line to Kris McFedries to score unopposed. The penalty count against the Lions was rising alarmingly, and eventually the pressure told when the visitors scored from a maul just before half time. All the conversions were unsuccessful which meant the half time score was ten all after a very even first half.

If the first period was very evenly contested, the second was to turn out very differently with the penalty count against the Lions continuing to rise alarmingly. Errors began to creep into Lion’s play and Syston made them pay dearly with a number of tries aided by some weak defence.

Worryingly Lions scrum half Callum Forsythe was forced to leave the field and go to hospital with a suspected broken jaw after receiving a forearm to the face in attempting to make a tackle. Lions did manage to cross the whitewash eventually when Andy Morrison made a good break from an inside pass from Ed Gledson. His offload came off a defender, but Andy Bowyer was on hand to claim the touchdown.

Lions went looking for their fourth try to secure a try bonus point and another break from Martin Wood got to within ten metres of the try line, but his offload to Parrington just drifted forward and the chance was gone. Another forearm to the face in attempting to fend off a tackler was this time spotted by the referee and a yellow card was rightly shown to the culprit. This was the end of the scoring and Syston maintained their 100% record so far this season.

Next week Lions travel to Towcestrians for a 3pm kick off.

Final score :-  Rugby Lions 15  Syston 37
