Tough TestSat 10 Mar

In the latest round of Midlands 1 West action, Webb Ellis Road hosted top of the league high flying Burton.

With the visitors averaging 42 points per game this season, this was always going to be a tough task for the Lions, and so it proved.  Burton's strong running and well organised backs were a real handful, and had the try bonus point secured after only 24 minutes. Another converted try near the end of the first period made the half time score a commanding 33-0 to the visitors.

In the first minute of the second half, a knock-on by Lions on their own 22 gifted the visitors another converted try and the omens were not looking good. To their credit, Lion's heads did not go down and they managed to create some pressure of their own. A trade mark catch and drive was halted illegally and Sam Herrington took a quick tap and crashed over for Lion's first score.

Lions were competing well at this stage, and what should have been a try-scoring pass was deliberately knocked on, and the culprit rightly shown a yellow card. From the resulting five metre lineout, Louis Addleton received a return pass and scampered over in the corner for Lion's second try.

The visitors replied almost immediately when some poor tackling allowed the Burton player to run straight through and under the posts for another converted try.

Burton had the final say with a pushover try which was once again converted.

Next Saturday sees Lions visit Bromsgrove for a re-arranged match following last week's postponent due to the snow. As there are six nations matches that afternoon the two clubs have agreed a 12.00 start to enable fans and players to watch the games.

Final score: -   Rugby Lions 10  Burton 54
